Best Reusable Water Bottle
A listener asks “which is the safest water bottle to use?”
Monica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, CNS
Q. What is the safest water bottle to use? I’m concerned about the dangers of using plastic bottles. I’ve tried reusable metal bottles, but they get too hot in the summer and give the water a metallic taste. What do you recommend?
A. Stainless steel water bottles offer several advantages. They are easy to clean, recyclable, light-weight, and non-reactive. Personally, I don’t notice a metallic taste from my stainless steel bottle but have heard other people complain about this. Adding some ice to the water and/or keeping it in an insulated polypropene sleeve can help keep the contents cool and fresh-tasting. Keeping your bottles scrupulously clean also helps.
But plastic water bottles can also be a safe and eco-friendly option. These days, most reusable bottles are made from BPA-free plastic. (See this helpful round-up of brands with various options and at various price-points: opens in a new windowBest Reusable Water Bottles.)
No matter what type of bottle you use, wash it (and its lid) thoroughly and regularly–and try to avoid leaving it in a hot car.
