Ask the Diva: How Much Protein is in Whey?
Q. I read in your newsletter that you can make your own Greek-style yogurt by straining some of the liquid out of regular yogurt. But isn’t all the protein in the liquid (whey) that you strain off?
Answer. Although whey is often used to make protein powder supplements, liquid whey is not all that high in protein. Two cups of low-fat yogurt contain about 22 grams of protein. If you strain it to produce a thicker, Greek-style yogurt, you’ll end up with about one cup of whey (containing about 2 grams of protein) and one cup of thick yogurt (containing the other 20 grams of protein). Liquid whey is mostly water.
