Ask the Diva: Where Should You Store Bread?
Q: How should I store bread: in the fridge or on the counter? How long can it be stored?
A: Storing bread in the refrigerator will inhibit the growth of mold. However, it will make the bread become stale more quickly. How fast bread will go stale or develop mold depends a lot on the moisture content of the bread and what preservatives have been added to it. Check the label on packaged breads for storage times and instructions.
In general, fresh bread from the bakery or your oven can be stored at room temperature for two or three days. To store for longer, it’s probably best to put it in the fridge. You can also freeze bread and thaw a few slices at a time as you need them. Bread will keep two to three weeks in the fridge and two to three months in the freezer.
