Ask The Diva: What’s in Bubble Tea?
Q. I really like those “bubble tea” drinks you can buy at Asian restaurants or cafes. Do you have any idea what the nutritional values are for these types of drinks? They have these chewy little balls at the bottom of the cup. I have no idea what they are. I am really curious about this and I knew that you would be the person I could come to for an answer.
Answer. The little chewy balls in “bubble tea” are tapioca pearls—little globs of starch from taro or cassava root. In the West, tapioca turns up most frequently in pudding and baby food. Bubble tea also typically contains sugar syrup, tea, fruit or other flavorings, and milk or non-dairy creamer. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but bubble tea is basically just a whole bunch of sugar and starch–empty calories with no redeeming nutritional value whatsoever.
