Speaking Up without Freaking Out: Techniques for confident presenting
Did you know that 85% of people feel nervous when speaking in public? It is one of the most common causes of anxiety in the US. But there are ways of overcoming this anxiety, and it’s so important to put out the effort. I’ve written an episode with some of my suggestions and tips to calm your nerves when public speaking. It will help you in business and in life, because people are more persuaded by confident speakers. And who really wants to feel nervous when speaking?
Matt Abrahams, author of How to Speak Up without Freaking Out, is a friend and colleague of mine. Matt is a lecturer in organizational behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. A while back, I interviewed Matt for The Public Speaker podcast and really enjoyed our conversation. He shared very valuable information to help people who suffer from anxiety around speaking in public. His books is well researched and I refer people to his book frequently.
Matt put together a video called Speaking Up without Freaking Out: Techniques for Confident Presenting, which I wanted to share with you. In this short video he goes over ten tips to help you be more confident. But in his book, he goes over them all in detail. He has also added to the new edition the latest research, a new chapter on non-verbal presence, and an appendix on persuasive communication.
As a special offer, I also wanted to share that Matt has just produced his third edition of the book, and he’s giving three away for free!
To get into the drawing for the books, which is our gift to Public Speaker readers, here’s what to do:
- Send an email to publicspeaker@quickanddirtytips.comcreate new email.
- Put in the subject line “I don’t want to be nervous anymore.” Use these exact words so I see it.
- In the body, include the name of the book, How to Speak Up without Freaking Out.
- Include your name and mailing address.
The deadline is May 10th, so don’t wait! On May 11th, I will pick three lucky winners. I hope you’re one of them!
