3 Ways to Celebrate National ‘Clean Up Your Room Day’
There are many ways to celebrate this year’s National Clean Up Your Room Day.

With Mother’s Day just lovingly celebrated we can now turn our focus and energy on another important May holiday—National Clean Up Your Room Day! In case you haven’t heard, each year on May 10th, there are dust bunnies running for cover, because this festive holiday promotes clean rooms and homes and encourages people to collect their favorite cleaning supplies, roll up their sleeves, and make everything shine.
Even if you haven’t caught a case of spring cleaning fever yet, this is a great excuse to get your family on board because if the rest of the country is celebrating such an important occasion, surely they’ll want to participate as well.
Here are some steps you and your cherished children can follow to celebrate.
- Call a family meeting to announce the great news that within a short period of time, you all get to participate in this fun event, which will ultimately benefit the entire family because when it’s done, everyone’s bedrooms (including yours!) will be clean, neat, and most importantly organized. Playing upbeat music while holding this important family meeting will add some positive energy and vibes!
- Be prepared, and this doesn’t refer to the possible moans and groans that your family will try to unload on you when they realize that Clean Up Your Room Day is indeed going to happen, and that you expect them to do their share. Be armed and ready with a step-by-step plan of attack as well as having the necessary supplies ready so that your family won’t have to waste time looking for the materials they’ll need. And having a basic list they can follow will also serve you all well because if the job of tidying up their bedrooms is a bit overwhelming, they’ll have a place from which to start. Here’s a sample list from Apartment Therapy.
- Pick up and put away all clothes, books, belongings
- Strip the bed
- Launder the bedding
- Flip the mattress
- Push aside the bed and clean under it
- Vacuum out the closet
- Dust all surfaces and wipe down light switches, fixtures, and ceiling fan with a microfiber cloth
- Clean windows and mirrors with a glass or all-purpose cleaner
- Vacuum drapes with brush attachment, wash curtains (if possible), or clean blinds
- Clean the floors/vacuum the carpet
- Remake the bed
- Enjoy a well-deserved great sleep in your very clean room!
- Create a Maintenance Routine. If there’s one thing most kid’s bedrooms have in common it’s the ability for these areas to be caught up in a frustrating cycle of being clean and organized only to suddenly become chaotic and messy within a matter of hours. Help guide your children to establish healthy maintenance routines so that they can stay on top of the clutter and such by managing the care of their rooms on a daily and weekly basis, not just when it reaches a point of a disastrous mess.
Come up with a daily and weekly list of bedroom maintenance items such as making the bed each morning and putting all toys and books that have been used away by the beginning of each weekend to help your child (and you) stay on top of things. If they learn young how to care for their personal belongings and their sacred space they’ll be better apt to do so when they become young adults.
