5 DIY Child-Proofing Solutions
Child proofing is serious business—but you can make some headway with these ingenious DIY child-proofing hacks.
Cheap DIY Child-Proofing for Cabinets
Here’s a great second use for a shower ring: Use it to keep a toddler out of your cabinets. Just run the ring through two handles that are close by and latch.
Keep Kids from Flipping Switches
If you have a switch for a light or something like a garbage disposal, keep toddlers from flicking it with this tip from Parent Hacks: Cut out a piece of plastic from a milk jug, then punch two holes in it with a screw driver and attach it to the switch plate using the pre-existing screws. It will keep kids from easily being able to flick that tempting switch.
Protect Kiddie Fingers
Baby-proof the doors inside your home with this cheap and simple trick—use a swimming noodle! Cut a vertical slice through a short length of foam noodle, then wrap it around the door’s edge to prevent it from closing and crushing little fingers. You can also use a pool noodle in your child’s bed to keep them from falling out. Place the pool noodle under the fitting sheet on the edge of the bed to create a soft barrier.
Keep Toilet Paper on the Roll
If your potty-trained toddler enjoys pulling toilet paper off the roll, use this trick to keep his TP usage in line: Before putting the roll on the dispenser, squeeze the tube so that it flattens slightly. This will keep the roll from turning too easily, making the amount that comes off the roll manageable.
Keep Kids Away from Outlets in a Pinch
It’s impossible to carry an entire baby-proofing kit with you every time you travel, but you can put a literal Band-Aid on the situation in hotel rooms: Use Band-Aids to cover open outlets! You’ll still need to keep an eye on babies and toddlers playing nearby to make sure they don’t peel them off, but will at least have the peace of mind knowing that the outlets aren’t left bare.
