Ask the Diva: Are Instant Oats Just as Good as Regular?
Q. Are unflavored instant (or quick) oats really worse for you than old-fashioned rolled oats? Surely they’re better than a lot of other breakfast alternatives. They’re so convenient.
Answer. In terms of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, the differences between regular and quick-cooking or instant oats are minimal. Perhaps the biggest difference is that the carbohydrates in instant oats are more quickly absorbed and converted into blood sugar. That is to say, they have a slightly higher glycemic index. Nonetheless, I would have to agree with you that unflavored instant oats are still a whole lot better for you than many other cereal options. But I don’t necessarily agree that instant oats are really that much more convenient. Perhaps this tip will allow you to have the best of both worlds!
And if you want to know how oatmeal stacks up against granola, I’ve got an answer to that.
