Ask the Diva: Can You Get Too Much Fiber?
Q. I get about 50g of fiber a day from my diet. Is this too much?Â
Answer. The Institute of Medicine, which establishes all the recommended nutrient intakes, hasn’t set an upper limit on fiber, meaning that there’s no amount at which it’s considered toxic. That doesn’t mean that an excess of fiber couldn’t make you uncomfortable, though! People who quickly and drastically increase their fiber intake sometimes experience cramping and bloating.
Taking very large amounts of fiber supplements could also cause intestinal blockages, especially if you don’t take them with sufficient water. But 50 grams of fiber doesn’t seem at all excessive for a healthy adult—especially because it sounds as if the fiber is coming from food (as opposed to supplements).
