Best Apps for Your iDevice
Tech Talker’s picks for the 7 best Apple apps to make life easier.
Today, I’m going to talk about 7 extremely useful apps available for your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. Together these are unofficially known as “iDevices.”
What Is an App?
First off, an application or “app” for short is a program made specifically to work on a specific device. In this episode we will be covering apps that focus on Apple’s line of iDevices. Apps are self-contained, user-friendly programs that provide a service or information on the go. Some of these applications are free, and others generally cost a few dollars. The nice thing about buying an app is that it is a one-time buy and once you purchase it, it’s yours forever!
There are apps for virtually anything you can think of: traffic patterns, travel advice, restaurant finders, etc. The 7 apps that I’ve chosen for this episode are by far some of the best ones out there:
1. Dropbox
What it does: Need a spreadsheet, PDF, or a picture? Dropbox is a file syncing program that you can download on your computer as well as your iDevice. Once installed, it will create a special folder wherever you choose. This folder will sync all files between any computers or devices you have. The great thing about this app is that it allows you to have all your files at your fingertips. Another great feature is that syncing occurs in real time, meaning you don’t have to attach your device to a computer every time you want changes to take place. It will update over WiFi or 3G (if you have an iPhone or iPad).

2. Evernote
What it does: There are many to-do list apps available but Evernote is by far my favorite. Besides being portable, this application can also install on your computer and allows you to keep many lists updated between all your devices. For me, this is great when I am going between my phone, desktop, and laptop. Evernote also lets you record video and audio notes, along with attaching pictures of virtually anything. This function is really useful when you don’t have time to type out a sentence or two.

3. Runkeeper
What it does: This little app can track just about any outdoor activity. Runkeeper uses the built-in GPS to track how fast you’re moving, where you’re moving, your pace, and elevation change. I’m an avid runner and I love that this app tracks my progress and even gives me updates on my pace and time. It will even allow you to select your activity to approximate how many calories you’ve burned, whether it be via cycling, hiking, or running. This is just the surface of this app, if you dig deeper, there are a ton more features such as social media connections, and a virtual trainer! Get-Fit Guy would definitely approve.
Cost: Free
4. Mint
What it does: Many of my clients ask me about the safest way to do their online banking. The best all-encompassing iDevice solution is Mint. This app can combine all of your bank accounts into one easy-to-view place. It is very secure and if you lose your device, you can disable your account through any internet browser. It helps me to stay on top of my spending and have all my information right at my fingertips.
Cost: Free
5. MapQuest
What it does: The built-in Maps application on most iDevices is for the most part great, but where the MapQuest app excels is in its ability to give you turn-by-turn directions. Of course this feature will only work on an iDevice with GPS capabilities. Another great thing about this app is that you can listen to any audio, including the Gadget Guy podcast, while you drive and the app will pause the audio in order to give you directions. This is an awesome way to keep from looking at a map, and can replace that expensive GPS you were considering buying.
Cost: Free
6. The Weather Channel
What it does: Apple already has a basic weather function on all of its devices but this app gives you up-to-the-minute Doppler radar images just like you would see if you were watching the news. Last year I was at a football game and noticed some clouds in the distance. I immediately whipped out my iPhone and watched the storm live as it came in. The app allowed me to judge with a great deal of accuracy the best time to leave if I wanted to stay dry. We left the game with 3 minutes to spare before it started to pour!

7. [Insert Your Bank Here]
What it does: Almost all of the major banks out there have great apps for your iDevice. If you aren’t using them, I highly suggest you do. They are great on the security front because most of them store none of your sensitive information online, and to access your account you must log in every time. So what are the benefits? Well, you can deposit checks by using the camera in your device, you can manage your accounts, check balances, transfer money, and much, much more. I for one was very nervous about having this sensitive information on a device that is so easily lost or stolen, but after seeing the security measures that have been put in place in many of these apps, I will never go back. Before you download your bank’s app, I would suggest doing some research on your specific risks, and maybe even talk to someone at your local branch. After all, when it comes to your hard-earned money, you can never be too safe!
