Ask the Diva: Does Magnesium Keep You Regular?
Q. I take calcium and magnesium supplements before bed and I’ve noticed that taking the magnesium helps me stay regular. Is this a good thing, or am doing myself harm with supplementing this way?
Answer. Magnesium can have a mild laxative effect and as long as you’re not taking ridiculous amounts, there’s no harm in using this to your advantage. In fact, if maintaining regularity is a problem for you, a magnesium supplement is probably one of the safest remedies you could use. The Institute of Medicine recommends (rather conservatively, in my opinion) that you take no more than 350 mg of supplemental magnesium per day.
