Ask the Diva: Does Whey Protein Have Oxidized Cholesterol?
Q. I am confused by a seeming contradiction in two recent episodes. In your show on oxidized cholesterol, you mentioned that whey protein powders may contain oxidized cholesterol, which should be avoided.
But in your episode on protein powders, you recommend whey protein powders as an inexpensive source of high quality protein.
Answer. I can certainly understand your confusion. I should have done a better job clarifying this.
Here’s the scoop (pun intended) on whey protein powders: Inexpensive whey protein powders, which are simply freeze-dried liquid whey, may contain significant amounts of cholesterol, most of which will be oxidized. Oxidized cholesterol is best avoided.
Higher-quality whey protein powders, often called “isolates,” are more purified and are usually cholesterol-free.
When shopping for a whey protein powder, be sure to check the nutrition facts label. As long as it’s cholesterol-free, oxidized cholesterol will not be a concern. Thanks for the opportunity to clear that up!
