Eco-friendly Sea Bass May Not Be What it Seems
Monica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, CNS
Sustainability is a big concern for many fish-eaters (myself included). Keeping track of which fish can be consumed guilt-free is tricky enough. (I rely on the Seafood Selector and Sushi Guide from the Environmental Defense Fund or the Seafood Watch app from Monterey Bay Aquarium.)
Unfortunately, you may not always be buying what you think you are.
A recent report reveals widespread mislabeling of fish in the commercial marketplace. Specifically, there appears to be a lot of Chilean sea bass that’s labeled as sustainably harvested–but isn’t. So disappointing and frustrating for people who are trying to do the right thing at the seafood counter!
Just to be on the safe side, I’m going to steer clear of Chilean sea bass for the time being. For more help in making good choices see my article on Mercury in Fish as well as chapter 1 of my book Secrets for a Healthy Diet: What to Eat, What to Avoid, and What to Stop Worrying About.
