Glucosamine for Vegans
Glucosamine supplements may help reduce joint pain. But most are made from shellfish. Now, there’s a vegan alternative.

If you have achy knees due to arthritis or athletic wear-and-tear, you’ve probably heard about glucosamine, which is promoted as a natural treatment for joint pain and arthritis. In my article Do Glucosamine Supplements Work?, I noted that glucosamine supplements are usually made from shellfish, so these supplements will not be acceptable to most vegans. Those with shellfish allergies will want to steer clear as well.
Nutrition Diva follower Christa recently emailed me to let me know about a new vegan glucosamine supplement that is made from corn rather than shellfish. It’s available from several popular supplement brands, including DEVA, Swanson, and NOW vitamins. You can find several retailers by doing an internet search for “Vegan glucosamine.”
Thanks to Christa for bringing this new development to my attention! For my full analysis of this popular supplement, see Do Glucosamine Supplements Work?
