January is the perfect time of year not only to clean and organize your linen closet, but re-stock it with new, high quality bed linens, comforters, and towels because it’s typically the month when “white sales” take place. The name originated many years ago when sheets only came in one color – white.
Now, we have so many choices of colors, fabrics, and thread counts it’s a little confusing to know what to choose. Here are a few quick tips to help you figure out what you need to stock your linen closet.
Sheets
If you like a soft feel to your sheets, look for 100% cotton. Choosing a higher thread count also helps give a luxurious feel as well as providing durability. Simply put – your sheets will last longer. Is style a priority? Look for sheets that blend well with your bedroom décor. Sheet sets are quite often the best bang for your buck. A sheet set usually includes a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. If you like to have more than the usual two pillows on your bed (or one on a twin), don’t forget to buy additional pillowcases. It’s nice to get a coordinating fabric rather than the exact same color or pattern as the main sheets and pillow cases.
Comforters and Blankets
Comforters and blankets are also on sale in January. Sometimes you can find a comforter/duvet cover set for a steal. Check department stores and online retailers for the best deals. Most department stores have awesome sales on bedding in January and quite often you can find a coupon for additional savings on the internet. If you do the legwork, you can get a high-quality comforter for under $75. Down comforters are a good option if you don’t suffer from allergies. A down comforter keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
If you suffer from allergies you may want to choose a down alternative comforter. Many of the characteristics are the same as real down without the allergy possibility. Less expensive comforters are often filled with polyester fiberfill. These are cheaper to start with but in the long run this type of comforter can get lumpy and bumpy. It’s worth spending the little extra up front for a better quality comforter. Remember: You’re going to be snuggling up with it 7-9 hours a night – that’s a third of every day! So it’s best to get as high a quality as you can.
Towels
January is also the perfect time to buy new towels which are also included in white sales. The rule of thumb for towel purchases is to buy the best quality you can afford. High quality towels can last up to 10 years. The size of bath towel you purchase is a personal choice. Many people enjoy an extra-large towel capable of wrapping around the entire body, while others like a smaller fit. Hand towels and washcloths are also on sale so replace those old, worn ones with some new thick and thirsty beauties.
One thing to remember: If you buy darker towels, wash them separately from other towels and bedding for the first few loads. Sometimes the darker colors can bleed a little in the first few washes.
Restocking your linen closet can be easy on your wallet when you shop all the amazing white sales during the month of January. New linens and towels always provide a fresh, clean feeling – a perfect start to your New Year!
