Winter is definitely here with freezing temps, snowy days, and lots more time being spent indoors. If cabin fever is starting to set in, I have 4 fun ideas that can help keep your kids busy and happy until they can get outdoors more.
Idea # 1: Get started in January on making Valentine Cards! Kids absolutely love making homemade cards complete with as much glitter, sparkle, stickers, and colorful markers as they can. This is fun but certainly a time consuming project, so before the Valentine rush, gather up supplies now and let them make a few cards at a time while they (and you) aren’t being pressed for time!
Idea #2: Create a Veterinarian office. If there’s one make pretend scenario my kids have always enjoyed it’s playing doctor. Winter is the perfect time for creating a pretend Veterinarian office with your child’s stuffed animals. Gather cotton balls, straws to use as shots, a small flashlight for them to look into their animal’s ears etc. Grab a notebook for them to schedule appointments. They’ll make sure all their favorite plush toys are in tip top shape!
Idea #3: Build a Kid Cave. Kids are so creative when it comes to building anything from blocks to intricate Legos. Forts are no different. Let them have at it with a bunch of old blankets, pillows, old boxes, and sheets and let them create their own “kid cave” underneath the dining room table or in the corner of the family room. Treat them to a bowl of popcorn and juice inside their masterpiece once they are done.
Idea #4: Window Painting. This is similar to finger painting, but a great, non-permanent way for kids to freshen up your home’s windows now that holiday decorations have been put away.
Materials needed:
- 2 tablespoons powdered tempera paint
- 1 tablespoon warm water
- 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
- Equal solution of vinegar and water
- Old towel or rag
- Mixing bowl
- Mixing spoon
- Newspaper or large trash bags (to cover the floor)
- Paintbrush
- Windows!
What to do:
Step One: Measure powdered paint into the mixing bowl.
Step Two: Stir in the warm water until the mixture is smooth.
Step Three: Next, add the dishwashing liquid to the mixture.
Step Four: Stir the mixture well, but try to avoid making suds.
Step Five: Now let your kids create their winter scenes on a window or two.
Step Six: The paint will dry in about 5 to 10 minutes.
Step Seven: To remove the paint, make a solution with equal parts of vinegar and water. One cup of each should be enough to remove the paint from one window with an old towel or rag.
