The Public Speaker’s Top 10 Podcasts of 2014
Welcome to The Public Speaker’s round-up of the top 10 episodes of 2014.
I’m always curious to see which episodes were the most popular with readers and listeners – I’m constantly surprised by what strikes a cord with you. One trend that is consistent from year to year, however, is that questions that come directly from you, the listeners, are always the most popular episodes.
So keep you emails coming, or post your thoughts on the Public Speaker Facebook page.
I’d love to hear from you. ;
Now that all the administrative stuff is out of the way, let’s jump right in and start the countdown of the most popular Public Speaker episodes of 2014:
Public Speaker Episode #10: How to Project Your Voice
How can I learn to project my voice? This is one of the most popular questions I get from listeners and clients, so it wasn’t surprising to see that this episode made the top 10. In this episode, I teach you how to project your voice and share tips for measuring how loudly or softly you’re speaking. The tips in this How to Project Your Voice are a valuable resource for anyone who often finds themselves in front of groups (lawyes, teachers, professional speakers, etc.).
Public Speaker Podcast #9: Can I Use Profanity in a Speech or Podcast?
This episode Can I Use Profanity in a Speech or Podcast? (Part 1) came about because I noticed a heated discussion about the use of profanity on the Public Speaker Facebook page. I wanted to weigh in with my opinion because I had some ideas about it that were different from what I was hearing from many participants in the debat.
As a general rule, I recommend that you avoid profanity in public speaking. In this episode I explain why and also offer my exceptions to the rule. It turns out there are a few good reasons to occasssioally curse!
Public Speaker Podcast #8: 7 Speech Tips for the Procrastinator
The episode 7 Speech Tips for the Procrastinator came directly from a listener question. Since, I’ve been known to procratinate here and there, this one was a good one for me to write as well! If you’ve ever procrastinated your preparation for a major speech or presentation, don’t worry, this episode has you covered.
Public Speaker Podcast #7: How to Gain the Attention of a VIP
One question consistently comes up during my networking workshops: How Do I Gain the Attention of a VIP?
Many people would like to upgrade their network and meet important peoplem, but they aren’t quite sure how to go about it. In this episode I give you tips for how to gain the attention of a VIP.
Public Speaker Podcast #6: 5 1/2 Public Speaking Lessons from the Golden Globes
Every year we learn new lessons from Hollywood on what not to do in front of an audience. The 2014 Golden Globes were no exception. Check out my episode on the 5 1/2 Public Speaking Lessons from the Golden Globes.
Public Speaker Podcast #5: 3 Public Speaking Secrets of Comedians
For many people (including myself) incorporating humor into a presenation is difficult. But it’s critically important if you want to be a successful speaker.
Why? Because good comedy isn’t just about making people laugh; it’s about making strong connections with the audience. In the episode 3 Public Speaking Secrets of Comedians, I share 3 tips you can learn from comedians that will improve your public speaking skills.
Public Speaker Podcast #4: How to Get a WOW (Not a Scowl) from Kids
This episode was inspired by my own children. Parents came in to make presenations at their school and my kids couldn’t help but evaluate their speaking skills. (I guess the leaves don’t fall very far from the tree).
If you’ve ever given a talk to children, you know that they can be a tough audience. They won’t just sit politely if they’re not interested in what you’re saying.
In the episode How to Get a Wow (Not a Scowl) from Kids (Part 1), I offer 10 tips for talking to children. I recommend you also check out Part 2 of the series as well, How to Get a WOW (Not a Scowl) from Kids (Part 2).
What was most interesting about this episode is that after it ran, many people wrote to me that the ideas weren’t just for kids – they had successfully incorporated many of the ideas that I talked about in their presentations with adults. I suppose we are all just kids at heart!
Public Speaker Podcast #3: How to Hold Your Own at the C-Suite Table
I created the episode How to Hold Your Own at the C-Suite Table due to the volume of email that I have recieved from people who said they’ve offered several good ideas at work, only to have them ignored or quickly rejected.
In this episode I offer tips for ensuring that your ideas are listened to and accepted at your job. This is one that is very practical and useful for anyone who wants to pump up their persuasive power.
Public Speaker Podcast #2: How to Use Polling to Keep Your Audience Engaged
The topic of audience engagement has been growing in popularity as more and more of us rely on webinars and video and teleconferencing at our jobs.
Polling is a great way to involve your audience in your presentation and there are several ways to do it. In the episode How to Use Polling to Keep Your Audience Engaged I explain why polling is valuable and offer both hi- and low-tech ways to run a poll.
I also did a follow-up episode with two really interesting examples of how people were using polling. Be sure to check out How Polls and Surveys Can Increase Audience Participation for more great tips on using polls to engage your audience. It was one of my favorite episodes of 2014.
Public Speaker Podcast #1: 10 Tips for Better ESL Conversations
The top episode of the year was 10 Tips for Better ESL Conversations. In this popular episode, I offer tips to ESL speakers for how to have better conversations in English. The popularity of this episode highlights the global nature of The Public Speaker audience. I’m really proud and excited about that.
That rounds out our top 10 list for 2014!
