Where to Get Protein When You’re Allergic to Everything?
Nutrition Diva explains where to get protein when you’re allergic to everything.
Monica Reinagel, MS, LD/N, CNS
Q. My daughter is allergic to fish, eggs, soy, and dairy products. How can I make sure she’s getting enough protein to support her growth?
Answer. I probably get about 90% of my protein from these four foods, so I can certainly understand your concern! Fortunately, you have lots of other options to ensure that your daughter gets plenty of protein to fuel proper growth. Peanut butter is protein-rich and a perennial favorite with kids. Meat and poultry are excellent sources of protein if you’re not a vegetarian. Beans and legumes are also good sources of protein. Kid-friendly options include baked beans, split pea soup, and hummus. And finally, don’t forget that whole grain foods can also provide a significant amount of protein. In particular, whole wheat bread or pasta, quinoa, and oat bran cereal are all great choices.
