The Huffington Post recently published an article called “Secrets of the Extremely Fit.” I have to admit that this particular article caught my eye because one of my goals for 2014 is to begin a quest to become one of the fittest men on the planet (I’m not kidding!). I personally plan on doing this by competing in a series of difficult events around the globe, including obstacle races such as the Spartan Race, adventure races like the North Idaho Challenge, off-road triathlons like XTerra, and even competitions involving strength and power like CrossFit.
So I read the article and it basically recommended the following:
- Eat nutrient-dense foods.
- Eat leafy greens.
- Get more Vitamin D.
- Spread protein throughout the day.
- Eat whey protein.
- Do full body, multi-joint exercises.
- Do “new” exercises.
- Learn how to do pull-ups and do lots of them.
- Lift heavier weights.
- Train your core.
This advice is just about spot-on! But I can’t resist throwing in my two cents. So if I were you and I wanted to get extremely fit, I’d go ahead and heed these tips, with two slight modifications:
-
Some people are allergic to whey. Keep your options open when it comes to protein powder, and consider alternate sources such as pea, rice, and hemp protein powders.
-
Include High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). To be fit, you body has to be forced to “run from a lion” every now and again. Here’s an episode to get you started with HIIT.
